Why Consider Clear Labels for Your Business?
Posted by : Mercury Labels Ltd on Monday, January 23, 2023 in Clear Labels.
If you’ll forgive the rather
predictable pun, clear labels are very much the clear choice for a great many
businesses. An exercise in simplicity and understated elegance, clear labels
are often designed to make it look like there is no label on a product at all.
You’ll have come across clear labels
on thousands have different products spanning myriad categories over the
years. Some businesses and manufacturers
use them exclusively, while others reserve them for specific products and
product types.
But what exactly is the appeal of
clear labels and why are they are so popular?
What would be the benefits of switching to clear labels, if you
currently use conventional opaque labels for your products?
Why Use Clear Labels?
The idea (and indeed the appeal)
behind clear labels is fairly straightforward.
When you use a minimalist label to market a product of some kind, you
give the impression that no embellishment is needed. Instead, you let the product itself do the
talking, and allow its natural characteristics to shine through.
Think a premium bottle of single malt
whisky, a pot of luxurious skin cream, or the vast majority of top-shelf
mineral waters. One of the few things all such products have in common is the fact
that they almost always feature minimalist labels, so that you can see exactly
what you are buying.
It’s essentially a case of telling the
customer that not only do you have nothing to hide, not that the quality of the
product speaks for itself. This is why transparent labels have an air of
sophistication and luxury about them, proving once and for all that less really
can be more.
There’s also a suggestion of ‘purity’
that accompanies clear product labels.
When you see a product with a clear label, you instinctively assume it
has nothing nasty or questionable in its composition. From organic produce to
cosmetics to cleaning products and so on, there’s an assumed purity to products
presented as simple and ‘raw’ as possible.
What Types of Clear Labels Are Right
For You?
If you decide to give clear labels a
shot for your own products, there are a few essential design considerations to
keep in mind. Many of which can be experimented with and adjusted on an ongoing
basis, in order to see what works best for your business and your customers.
There’s a broad spectrum of options
available where clear labels are concerned.
For example, clear labels do not have to be as flawlessly crystal-clear
as glass. They can be translucent to any
extent you like and tinted in any shade that suits your branding strategy. If
the product in the packaging could be potentially damaged by exposure to light,
it may be necessary to choose something slightly opaque – i.e. moderately
transparent at the most.
Another consideration is how the text
and graphics on the label may be affected by the colour of the product in the
container. You may decide to go with crystal-clear labels and simple white
lettering, in order to keep things as pure and untainted as possible. However,
this may result in the colour of the lettering looking completely different
from one product to the next, if you sell products of different colours in the
same packaging (such as red, white and rose wine, or a broad range of soft
drinks in clear bottles).
It is important to decide whether or
not you want to make it easy (or even possible) for your customers to peel away
your clear labels, after purchasing your products. Clear labels can be anything
from easy-peel (with no sticky residue left behind) through to permanent
labels, which are practically impossible to remove without making a mess.
